You have a choice:
a.) To focus on what’s not working, how people wrong you, how life’s not fair
b.) To focus on the actual work that you want to create, to express who you are and to serve the world in your unique way
(Option c. would be to find a way to live on the Moon, but considering that’s probably not likely, let’s leave it with what we have.)
The next time someone or some situation pisses you off, ask yourself why.
I’ll take a guess and suggest that most times it’s because that someone or something is stopping you from doing what you really want to do or impeding your expression in some way. Even if you’re not exactly sure what it is you want to do or say. It can be easier to put the blame elsewhere than to take a leap into your own unknown and see what wants to emerge.
I’ve been guilty of this many times over the years. How bout you?
Reminiscent of that teenage angst when it seems like Mom or Dad is doing everything possible to make your life miserable…
“Why is my boss such a jerk?”
“Why do I always have to be the one to do the dishes?”
“Why doesn’t our culture value the arts more?”
“Why can’t I just live on the Moon!?!”
Yes, these are real issues, and I’m not negating them. But I’m saying that as real as those grievances are, there’s a much deeper truth that needs to be addressed, and that truth lies inside of you.
So next time you get yourself in a tizzy, pacing the floors or ranting to your friends over drinks, stop for a minute and shift your perspective. (If you have difficulty stopping, I highly recommend a dance break or a body-shaking moment to create a segway.)
Then ask yourself this:
What truth in me is not being expressed?
All fear aside, where do I genuinely want to be focusing my energy?
And then do one small thing to go there. Do that. Do that thing you’re scared to do. Write a blog post. Organize a dance party. Sign up for those voice lessons.
Because when it comes down to it, there’s no one stopping you but yourself. In fact, the more you start to speak your truth, the more you’ll discover how many people will come out of the woodwork to cheer you on.
What’s your truth?
What’s getting in your way?
